What is a RACI matrix?

Also called: RACI chart, responsibility assignment matrix

Definition

Last updated

A RACI matrix is a table that shows, for each task or decision in a process, who is Responsible for doing it, who is Accountable for it, who must be Consulted and who must be Informed. It makes roles clear before the work starts, so tasks are not dropped or done twice.

In more detail

The rows are tasks and the columns are people or roles; each cell holds R, A, C or I. The usual rules are that every task has exactly one person Accountable and at least one Responsible, and that the same person can be both. Too many Cs slow a process down; too many Is fill inboxes.

A RACI matrix is a planning tool. It is most useful when it is turned into the process itself: the Responsible person assigned to the task, the Accountable person given the sign-off, and the Informed people told automatically.

Example

For hiring a new role, the hiring manager is Accountable for the decision and Responsible for the interviews, HR is Responsible for the job advert and the offer letter, finance is Consulted on the salary, and the team is Informed when the offer is accepted.

RACI in CheckFlow

In CheckFlow the matrix becomes the checklist: each task is assigned to the people or groups Responsible for it, the Accountable person completes a sign-off step that halts the checklist until it is done, and notifications tell the Informed people when a task or the checklist is completed.
