What is a process owner?
Last updated
A process owner is the person accountable for a process from start to finish: that it is documented, that it works, that people follow it and that it improves. They do not do every step themselves, but they decide how the process should run, approve changes to it and watch how well it performs.
In more detail
Processes without an owner drift. The documentation goes out of date, teams invent their own versions, and when something goes wrong nobody has the authority to change the process. Naming an owner fixes that, as long as the owner has the time and the authority to act.
Typical duties include keeping the documentation current, reviewing it on a set date, agreeing changes with the people who do the work, checking measures such as how long the process takes and how often it fails, and answering questions about it.
Example
The finance director owns the month-end close. She does not post the journals, but she approves the close checklist, reviews it after each quarter, decides to add a reconciliation step after an audit finding, and tracks how many days the close takes.
Process owners in CheckFlow
In CheckFlow the process lives as a template in the Library, where folder permissions decide who can view or edit it. Every save is a new version, Template Analytics show how runs of the process are going, and the owner can be named in the template’s description and given the review as a recurring checklist.
