What is client onboarding?
Also called: customer onboarding
Last updated
Client onboarding is the process of bringing a new client from a signed agreement to a working relationship. It covers collecting their information and documents, setting up accounts and access, agreeing goals and contacts, and the first meetings, so that the client sees progress quickly and nothing they were promised is forgotten.
In more detail
The first weeks set the tone for the whole relationship. A client who has to send the same document twice, or waits days to hear what happens next, starts to doubt the decision to sign. A clear onboarding process gives them one plan, one contact and visible progress.
Most client onboarding has the same shape whatever the industry: a handover from sales so the team knows what was agreed, a welcome and kickoff, collecting information and documents, setting up systems and access, the first delivery, and a check-in to confirm the client is happy. Regulated firms add identity and due diligence checks before any work starts.
Example
A managed service provider signs a new client. Sales hands over the contract and notes, the account manager books the kickoff, the client uploads their network details and contacts, engineers install the monitoring agents, and after 30 days the account manager reviews the first month with the client.
Client onboarding in CheckFlow
In CheckFlow each new client gets their own checklist from your onboarding template, with tasks assigned to your team and due dates counted from the start. You can share a checklist with the client through a link so they complete their own steps, such as uploading documents, and guests and shared links are free on every plan.
